In today’s hyper-connected world, we’re more dependent on our mobile devices than ever before. Given the sheer number of mobile virtual network operators (MVNOs) on the market, choosing a suitable service provider can be overwhelming. One option that stands out is Tello – a MVNO that leases space from T-Mobile’s network to offer a range of affordable, contract-free plans.
Having spent seven months as a Tello user, I’ve compiled this detailed review of my experience with their services.
Tello: An Overview
Launched in 2016, Tello is part of KeepCalling, a global business that has been providing international calling plans since 2002. Tello piggybacks off T-Mobile’s network, utilizing LTE bands 2, 4, 5, 12, 66, and 71, and 5G bands on n41, n71, n258, n260, and n261.
Flexible Prepaid Plans
What sets Tello apart is the flexibility of its prepaid plans. These plans range from a basic package of 1 GB data, unlimited minutes and texts for $10 per month, to an unlimited package offering unlimited data, minutes, and texts for $29 per month. These packages do not include taxes.
You can create up to 5 lines for you and your family, customising each and every plan to your heart’s content.
But the customization doesn’t end here. Tello also allows you to mix and match services to suit your specific needs. Whether you require a limited number of minutes but extensive data or the other way around, Tello has got you covered.
Bring Your Own Device
Tello also supports the ‘bring your own device’ option. Your device must support VoLTE and specific LTE bands to provide the best service.
Wi-Fi Calling and eSIM Support
A feature I especially appreciated was Tello’s Wi-Fi calling. This allowed me to make and receive calls even in areas with weak cellular service. Additionally, Tello provides eSIMs for free. An eSIM is a digital SIM that lets you activate a cellular plan without having to use a physical SIM card – a quick and convenient solution for many users.
Pay as You Go Credit
Tello also offers Pay As You Go credit options, starting from $20 and valid for 90 days. This can be used for US calls, texts, and data, as well as international communication.
Pros and Cons
In my seven-month trial, I found Tello’s affordability, flexibility, and range of features highly commendable. Their no-contract approach and impressive customer service add to their appeal.
However, the service isn’t without its flaws. In some areas, the coverage was not as extensive as traditional carriers, and data speeds occasionally fell short. There is also a soft data cap of 25 GB on the $29 unlimited package.
Conclusion
Despite these minor setbacks, Tello offers remarkable value for its price. If you’re looking for a budget-friendly, feature-rich, and flexible mobile plan, Tello is well worth considering.
