eSim options in South Africa

An eSim, or an Embedded SIM, is a virtual SIM card that is embedded directly into your device, eliminating the need for a physical SIM card. eSims are becoming increasingly popular as they provide more flexibility and convenience to users. However, You can’t activate and manage your mobile service directly from your device as yet in South Africa and I suspect that this has something to do with the government’s interference.

This means that tourists do not really have the convenience of eSims, with the exception of MeAndYouMobile’s service, (see below).

In South Africa, the availability of eSim options varies across different mobile networks. As of now, Vodacom claims to have eSim capability but it does not work. MTN has eSim options available on post and prepaid, but it is restricted to a physical QR code that can only be used once. Telkom Mobile also offers eSim options on post and prepaid with a physical QR code that can only be used once. Cell C has eSims available only on post-paid. However, MeAndYouMobile, a virtual mobile network, provides an easy and convenient option for users to register an eSim from the comfort of their homes, using just their website.

In conclusion, while eSim adoption is slow in South Africa, it is expected to pick up pace in the near future. The convenience and flexibility of eSims are making them a popular choice among mobile users. As the market evolves, we can expect more options and better services to become available.
